It is a network of single atoms, surrounded by a 'sea of electrons'.

The analogy is to think of a fishermans net. Each knot/node in the net is the atom , and the water is the 'sea' of electrons'.

All metals are described in this way. The analogy is NOT quite correct, but it is the best way I can describe it.

NB Aluminium metal is very reactive. When on contact with oxygen (air) it immediately reacts to form an impervious layer of aluminium oxide, which is casually called aluminium.
